Why I Love Being Gay

When I came out in my early 20’s, I had no idea how life changing it would be. It was probably the first time I looked at myself and was honest about who I was and what I was about and although looking back I remember it being a really fucking exciting time in my life it was anything but easy.

Throughout my school years I was told being gay was abhorrent, not normal and that those who were gay were going straight to hell and I totally bought into this. I was a fucking child that didn’t know any better living in a poxy ass small seaside town that had absolutely no queer representation.

As a result when I did act upon my gay urges I felt absolutely ashamed and disgusted with myself, and although I have never admitted this to anyone this self hatred played a huge part in my multiple suicide attempts at school…… (FYI = This has been a secret of mine for 30 years so I’m not to sure how I feel about telling you all this but in for a penny in for a pound I guess)

But how things have changed……

Nowadays things couldn’t be more different for me. I love being a filthy gay boy. I love the fact we can walk down the street holding our fella’s hands and no one bats an eyelid…. It always puts a smile on my face.

Where I am today is…..I’m proud of myself…. I love being gay, I love my gay friends, I love the community and I love what being part of the LGBTQIA gives us, such as ⬇️

Being gay is part of our identity and how we express ourselves. It can also bring joy, fulfillment, and connection with others who share our orientation.

Being gay can help us develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and our emotions. We can learn to be more open, honest, and authentic with ourselves and others. We can also discover new aspects of our personality, interests, and values that make us unique.

Being gay can give us the opportunity to explore different relationships and experiences. We have more freedom and flexibility to choose who we want to date, love, or marry. We can also have more fun and excitement in our romantic and sexual life.

Being gay can connect us with a supportive and diverse community. We can find friends, mentors, role models, or allies who accept us for who we are.

Being gay can inspire us to be proud of ourselves and our identity. We may have overcome challenges or prejudices that have made us stronger and more resilient. We can also embrace our differences and uniqueness as sources of beauty and strength.

We should be proud as a community about how far we’ve come. We should be proud of ourselves that we’ve created a community where we are allowed to explore how we live our lives without the boundaries the straight community has set for themselves…… I think that’s a real special gift we’ve given ourselves and something that should be treasured.
